Psychiatrist

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor who has completed the extensive educational pathway of medical school, earning either an M.D. or D.O. degree, followed by a 4-year residency program specializing in psychiatry. Their unique training equips them to approach mental illness primarily through a medical and biological model. As a result, they often utilize various types of medications, such as antidepressants and mood stabilizers, as a primary treatment strategy to address a wide range of mental health conditions. Most appointments with psychiatrists primarily focus on medication management, ensuring that patients receive the most suitable and effective medications to manage their symptoms. While psychiatric training includes exposure to various types of therapy, it’s important to note that psychiatrists typically do not provide therapy sessions. Nevertheless, they possess a foundational understanding of the principles of therapy employed by different mental health care providers, enabling them to collaborate effectively with therapists and counselors to deliver comprehensive and holistic care to their patients.
