Bible StudyCommonly Asked Questions
Emotions play a very important role in our lives. Part of life is being able to feel joy, sadness, anxiety, and excitement. The ability to feel plays a major role in our relationships with others, our decision-making, etc. If we are not able to identify or recognize the impact which emotions have on our life, we can miss the clues they can give into our overall well-being and our relationships.
Helpful ACCFS Resources:
Often our first impulse can be to try to force painful emotions away. This can lead to internal dialogue such as “I shouldn’t feel this way”, “I hate this feeling”, or “This is more than I can bear.” If this internal dialogue is not met with compassion and truth, we can increase our suffering by fighting with ourselves. A helpful strategy is to speak truth while validating or acknowledging the difficulty. It might sound something like “This is so difficult, and I know the Lord is with me” or “I don’t know if I can bear this pain, and I will seek to trust the Lord in it.” You can learn more about navigating emotional pain with these resources.
Helpful ACCFS Resources:
While you may not be able to remove someone else’s pain, you can still recognize, validate, and speak truth into their pain. To simply feel heard and listened to can itself be a very comforting experience. As we listen and gently point others toward lasting truth, we can support the hurting, pointing hearts to the One who will one day wipe away our tears once and for all (Revelation 21:4).
Helpful ACCFS Resources:
We must learn how to manage our emotions, because unmanaged emotions can become barriers to effectively coping with stressors and correctly understanding our self-worth in Christ. Tools that can help you better understand your emotions and know how to regulate them include breathing exercises, scripture meditation, prayer, and others.
