Commonly Asked Questions

Why is marriage counseling helpful?

For many couples, life events, stress, and transitions can distance marital relationships over time. In addition, familiarity with your spouse and complacency can lead you to take him or her for granted. Unless you are intentional, the health of your marriage will be left to the ebb and flow of life stressors and events. From time to time, it is beneficial to intentionally invest in the health of your marriage, identifying areas that need attention as well as rejoicing in the areas that are going well. ACCFS has developed a program for the sole purpose of growing your marital relationship. Click here for an outline of Nurturing a Great Marriage, an ACCFS marriage enrichment program.

How does marriage change over time?

The marriage relationship will naturally evolve and change over time. Couples can draw closer to each other and experience an even richer relationship or unfortunately, drift apart. Intentionality and regular reflection coupled with focusing on any needed repair can encourage marital health. The resources below can help a couple consider the state of their relationship.

Helpful ACCFS Resources:

What does marriage mean to God?

Scripture emphasizes marriage to be a metaphor of our relationship with Christ (2 Corinthians 11:2; Ephesians 5:22-33), and God desires for us to have vibrant marital relationships. Deepening our connection and bond with our spouse flows out of an abiding communion with each other. When securely connected to our spouse, we experience more peace, rest, and resilience to engage in life’s journeys.

Helpful ACCFS Resources:

Why do marriages fail?

Marriage takes work as any marriage is a relationship between two imperfect people. Therefore, nearly every married couple has challenging times. For some, these struggles reach the point of profound discouragement, loneliness, and despair. Even marriages that are seemingly going well can suffer distress if a single shattering event, such as an extramarital affair, takes place. For others, the distress may be the result of an ongoing struggle a spouse may experience. Regardless, marital distress has a tremendous impact, often leading to intense anxiety, paralyzing fear, deep sadness, and a sense of hopelessness. Regular effort at connection, communication, forgiveness, and repair are needed to keep a marital relationship in a place of growth. You can see some resources intended to give hope in these difficult circumstances below.
