Discipleship

The church is called to be “members one of another,” building each other up in a deeper walk with Christ. Sometimes this encouragement will happen through an encouraging word from a passing relationship, but at other times, it will begin to take the form of a more regular discipleship relationship. The resources in this community are intended to assist someone who is walking in a discipleship relationship with another individual.

Spiritual Disciplines

Every endeavor has basic skills that support the success of the effort. For example, tying rope-climbing knots is a basic skill for rock climbing. Study skills are rudimentary for a student. These basic skills are sometimes called disciplines. They are practices from which success springs. The Christian life has disciplines which must be learned. The more we practice these disciplines, the more we grow and mature in them.

Biblical Meditation

Spiritual Disciplines: What is Biblical Meditation?

Throughout the Scriptures we are told to meditate. Yet most of us would have a difficult time defining what meditation is and what it might look like in daily life. A basic definition of mediation is to ponder or contemplate.

Learn More

Spiritual Disciplines: Why Biblical Meditation?

If meditation is defined as pondering or contemplating what is true, then the next question is why meditate? Many of us desire deeper communion with the Lord and greater wisdom to navigate the challenges that arise. Meditating on things of God is a key ingredient to this desired destination.

Spiritual Disciplines: How to Engage Biblical Meditation?

Meditation is not difficult, but it is built on skills and resources that are scarce for many of us. We live in a “cliff notes” society where we want the summary rather than the full version. Many of us have lost our ability to keep our mind fixed on a topic because we have become so accustomed to transitioning from one thing to another.

Bible Reading

Spiritual Disciplines: The Big Picture of the Bible

Coming to the Scriptures without background knowledge has some advantages because you might be better able to read the scriptures for what they say without preconceived ideas. However, without understanding the larger storyline of the passage/s you are reading, the Bible can quickly become confusing.

Spiritual Disciplines: Why Read the Bible?

It can be helpful to step back and ask yourself, “why do I read the Bible?” Doing the right behavior is important but the “why” we engage specific actions is what gives sustaining life and energy to those behaviors.

Learn More

Spiritual Disciplines: How to Read the Bible?

No matter which specific “how-to” you engage, there are two things that will need to be the foundational in your Bible reading. First, the Holy Spirit illuminating your heart and mind to the Scriptures. Second, you will need to grow as an active rather than merely a passive reader of Scripture.

Prayer

Spiritual Disciplines: What is Prayer?

Prayer is an amazing gift from a merciful God who desires reconciliation to a rebellious people. We access this direct line to God through audible words, internal thoughts as well as groanings that rise from within us.

Learn More

Spiritual Disciplines: Why Pray?

Prayer, like many Spiritual Disciplines, is difficult to engage without it becoming a task to check off the list rather than a discipline which changes us, connects us to the Lord and affects the world. For this reason, it is important to remind ourselves of what we are doing and why we do it.

Learn More

Spiritual Disciplines: How to Pray?

As we walk with Christ, we are to grow in his likeness. This is the process of sanctification where we are learning and growing as we read the Word, spend time with other believers, and pray.

Worship

Spiritual Disciplines: What is Worship?

The Hebrew word shachah means “to worship, prostrate oneself, bow down”. In 1 Samuel 24:8 shachah is translated “bowed” when describing David’s response to King Saul. In Exodus 34:8 it is translated “worshipped” describing Moses’ reaction to experiencing the Lord’s presence on Mount Sinai. In general, shachah gives the picture of acknowledging and yielding to a higher authority.

Spiritual Disciplines: Why Worship God?

There is no doubt as we experience creation as well as what has been accomplished by man, we will have moments of awe. These moments of awe are to point us to God and worship of him. This exposes the challenge of training our hearts and minds to an accurate view of God and man. While man can accomplish many great things, the question “where does this ability come from” remains.

Learn More

Spiritual Disciplines: How to Worship God

To worship according to truth means to rightly know and therefore elevate the God of the Bible through word and action. Throughout Scripture, God’s mercy and justice are tied together; God is both merciful and just. When God is seen as such, we reverence him.

Fasting

While the discipline of fasting is not unique to the Christian experience, nor is it explicitly commanded in Scripture, the Christian church does have a long history surrounding the practice. It has stemmed from numerous examples and teachings on fasting found in the Bible.
