Parenting styles center around two core factors – responsiveness and demandingness. Responsiveness is a parent’s ability to recognize a child’s needs or desires and respond to them. Demandingness refers to a parent having expectations for how a child should act along with appropriately engaging the child when those expectations are not met. In general, the most desirable parenting style is being high in responsiveness and high in demandingness. It is important to remember that every child is different, and responsiveness and demandingness will look different with any given child. You can learn more at the resources below.

Children, while resilient, are affected dramatically by the environment around them. A loving, secure environment will lead to healthy attachment to parents while a chaotic environment can lead to a variety of issues. By creating a healthy bond with our children, parents will help them develop the skills needed to be able to relate to others in a healthy manner for their entire lives.

Parents play an important and noticeable role in their child’s physical, emotional, relational, and spiritual development. They have a God-given responsibility to be caring and corrective to their children as children learn many things through the daily interactions with their parents. When asked by researchers, children consistently name parents as primary influencers in their life. However, God has also created humans to be resilient, and children can do well despite their parents’ mistakes. God’s grace and healing is infinitely more powerful than our positive or negative parenting approach. This gives us hope and courage as we engage in the opportunity of parenting to the best of our ability while also trusting God for his provision.
